Subject: Council Support for McCarthy Farm Application to
the DNR's Metro Greenways Program

A RESOLUTION STATING THE CITY'S SUPPORT FOR THE METRO GREENWAYS GRANT APPLICATION FOR THE MCCARTHY FARM

WHEREAS the McCarthy Farm represents an environmental and historical treasure to the Eagan community; and

WHEREAS the McCarthy Farm is a valuable open space asset to the City of Eagan, possessing important ecological attributes in the form of wetlands, ponds, forests, rolling hills, and other critical wildlife habitat; and

WHEREAS the McCarthy Farm was established by Mr. Patrick McCarthy's great grandparents upon their emigration from Ireland, being purchased from Henry Hastings Sibley (subsequently the state's first governor) nearly 160 years ago; and

WHEREAS it is the desire of the Eagan City Council to see significant portions of the McCarthy property preserved for future generations; and

WHEREAS the McCarthy property represents the northern bookend of the Eagan Core Greenway; and

WHEREAS the Eagan City Council listed the pursuit of future green space initiatives as a 2003 City Council goal; and

WHEREAS Mr. Patrick McCarthy, in partnership with Friends of Patrick Eagan Park and the Friends of the Mississippi River, is applying for grant funding through Metro Greenways;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Eagan, that the City of Eagan supports the Metro Greenways grant application of Mr. Patrick McCarthy in order to assist in the preservation of the McCarthy Farm.
